JOE BUKENYA
Born 1998. Masaka, Uganda
Bukenya was born and raised in Masaka and graduated as a primary school teacher from Kyambogo University. He experiments with material to create colorful collages that depict everyday life in Ugandan cities. During the early stages of his career he met Ugandan mixed media artist Collin Sekajugo who mentored him and he started considering conceptual themes in his artwork and experimenting with different material like paper cartons, news prints, fabric, back cloth, ink and acrylic paint to enhance the visual language in his paintings and style. In his work Bukenya explores the relationship between the black body, technology, and environments. Bukenya conjures up figures with circuitry running over their skins a metaphor that the black body exists in a state of flux with technology it is at once a tool and user of systems.
Bukenya has participated in group shows at Afriart Gallery in Kampala and One-Off Gallery in Nairobi.
